Stellar (XLM)’s Protocol 23 will enable CAP-67 to emit events for past and future ledgers. Discover the implications for developers and the available upgrade paths.

Stellar (XLM) is set to launch Protocol 23 later this year, introducing significant enhancements to its blockchain’s event emission capabilities. According to Stellar, the upcoming CAP-67 update will not only generate events for new ledgers but also allow for retroactive event generation for past ledgers, provided certain configurations are made.

Understanding CAP-67 and Its Impact

CAP-67 is a critical component of Protocol 23, designed to enhance event data emissions across the Stellar blockchain. By leveraging two new core flags, operators can opt to emit classic events and backfill historical ledger data. These flags, EMIT_CLASSIC_EVENTS and BACKFILL_STELLAR_ASSET_EVENTS, offer developers a more comprehensive view of transactional events.

When enabled, the EMIT_CLASSIC_EVENTS flag will add fee events and classic-operation token movements, such as payments and clawbacks, to the event stream. Meanwhile, the BACKFILL_STELLAR_ASSET_EVENTS flag allows for the generation of new events for all past ledgers, ensuring a complete historical event feed.

Upgrade Paths for Developers

Stellar provides three upgrade paths for developers, each with varying levels of event support and historical data coverage. The first option, which offers partial event support, is not recommended as it excludes classic operations from the event stream and only emits Soroban events. The second path provides full event support from the Protocol 23 upgrade onward but lacks historic data.

The third and recommended option offers full event support with complete historical coverage. This path requires re-ingesting the full history but allows developers to accurately compute account balances, circulating supply, and other analytics.

Technical Considerations

With the introduction of Protocol 23, a new version of TransactionMeta XDR, known as TransactionMetaV4, will be implemented. Operators of RPC nodes, Horizon, or Galexie must ensure compatibility with this new meta version to fully leverage the protocol upgrade.

These developments come as Stellar continues to enhance its blockchain infrastructure, aiming to provide more robust data analytics and transaction tracking capabilities for its users. For more detailed information, visit the Stellar website.
