The Based Rollup Summit in Cannes highlighted advances in Ethereum scalability, focusing on technologies like preconfirmations and booster rollups to enhance user utility and maintain decentralization.
The second Based Rollup Summit, held alongside EthCC Cannes 2025, brought together industry leaders to explore the future of Ethereum scalability. According to taiko.mirror.xyz, the summit focused on advancing based rollup technology, preconfirmations, and other innovations shaping Ethereum’s next chapter.
Joaquin Mendes, COO of Taiko, highlighted the ubiquity of preconfirmations, even in simple transactions like buying coffee. Mendes emphasized that preconfirmations are crucial for enhancing user experience on Taiko, making them essential for Ethereum’s scalability.
Shiv Sankar, CEO of Boundless, stressed the importance of focusing on user utility over technological competition in the zero-knowledge (ZK) space. Sankar noted that the real challenge comes from traditional tech giants, urging the blockchain community to prioritize user behavior and utility.
Alon Muroch, CEO of SSV Network, introduced the Universal Registry Contract (URC) to simplify validator onboarding. By eliminating registration friction, SSV aims to make it easier for validators to participate in based rollup services, presenting new opportunities for validators on Layer 2 networks.
Daniel Wang, CEO of Taiko, addressed the complexities of reducing Ethereum’s block times. He explained that Ethereum’s decentralized nature makes faster consensus impractical without sacrificing core values. This highlights the importance of based preconfirmations for achieving scalability.
Summit panelists discussed metrics for success, focusing on adoption and economic viability. Key milestones include deploying based rollups with preconfirmations and achieving reduced fees and improved user experience.
Tomasz K. Stanczak of the Ethereum Foundation discussed strategies for mainstream adoption, emphasizing the importance of supporting enterprises to navigate regulatory challenges while maintaining blockchain integrity.
Marek Olszewski, CEO of Celo, questioned how to make Ethereum appealing to institutional investors and users. He highlighted the need to differentiate Ethereum by emphasizing its unique value as a yielding asset.
Justin Drake, an Ethereum Foundation researcher, underscored the necessity of horizontal scaling. With vertical scaling options exhausted, Ethereum must adopt solutions like shared sequencing and cheaper SNARK verification to facilitate more frequent settlements.
Brecht Devos, Co-founder and CTO of Taiko, introduced booster rollups, which enable L1 smart contracts to be directly available on L2s. This innovation promises scalability without losing composability.
The summit concluded with discussions on achieving internet-scale blockchain systems while preserving decentralization. Leaders emphasized that true scalability involves creating systems capable of handling global demand without compromising blockchain’s core values.
The Based Rollup Summit showcased a range of innovations that promise to enhance Ethereum’s scalability, pointing towards a future where blockchain technology can meet global demands while maintaining its decentralized ethos.
