IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta introduces post-quantum and hybrid signatures for Verifiable Credentials, enhancing digital identity security against future quantum threats.

The IOTA Foundation has launched IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta, a significant upgrade introducing post-quantum and hybrid signatures for Verifiable Credentials, in collaboration with the LINKS Foundation, according to the IOTA Blog. This release aims to safeguard digital credentials against potential quantum computing threats, ensuring long-term security and transparency.

Post-Quantum Security and Public Verifiable Credentials

As quantum computing evolves, it poses a threat to current cryptographic systems used in blockchains and digital identities. The IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta addresses this by incorporating post-quantum cryptography, designed to protect against future quantum attacks. This proactive measure ensures that credentials issued today will remain secure for decades.

Secure Signatures for a Post-Quantum Era

In partnership with the LINKS Foundation, IOTA introduces two new signature methods for Verifiable Credentials. Post-Quantum Signatures, utilizing algorithms like ML-DSA recommended by NIST, are engineered to withstand quantum threats. Additionally, Hybrid Signatures integrate traditional and post-quantum algorithms, facilitating a smooth transition to enhanced security without overhauling existing systems. These features are currently experimental, allowing for testing and alignment with evolving standards.

On-Chain Credentials

Traditionally, Verifiable Credentials in IOTA Identity were exchanged off-chain. The new version allows organizations to publish these credentials directly on-chain, making them publicly accessible and verifiable. This feature is particularly beneficial for organizational credentials requiring transparency, such as certifications and technical specifications, while ensuring sensitive data complies with privacy regulations like GDPR.

Why This Matters

The updates in IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta provide future-proof security against quantum threats, facilitate a gradual transition with hybrid signatures, and enhance transparency with on-chain verifiable credentials. These advancements make digital identities more secure and efficient, aligning them with real-world applications.

Developers can now access IOTA Identity 1.7 Beta for Rust and WASM, complete with developer examples. This release is part of the broader IOTA Trust Framework, which aims to enhance trust and security across digital ecosystems.
