BNB Chain introduces super-instructions to improve smart contract execution on BSC, achieving faster performance and scalability without altering consensus or requiring code changes.

The BNB Chain has unveiled a novel approach to enhance smart contract execution on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) by implementing super-instructions. This innovation aims to optimize the execution of frequently used EVM bytecode sequences by consolidating them into single opcodes, significantly reducing execution overhead, according to BNB Chain.

Streamlining Execution with Super-Instructions

Super-instructions on BSC offer a 15% faster execution rate, a 14% quicker synchronization speed, and a 17% increase in throughput. The optimizations are local, length-preserving, and fully compatible with existing consensus mechanisms and tooling, ensuring no disruptions in network operations. These enhancements allow developers to achieve smoother execution, lower node costs, and bolster scalability for real-world workloads without altering existing smart contract code.

Technical Implementation and Benefits

The BSC processes billions of transactions, many of which are repetitive DeFi interactions. By identifying and optimizing these high-frequency bytecode sequences, super-instructions replace multiple instruction steps with a single atomic operation, thereby increasing efficiency. This approach benefits developers, auditors, and node operators alike by offering faster contract execution, maintaining tooling integrity, and reducing resource usage during block processing.

Super-instructions are mined from mainnet traffic, leveraging a data-driven pipeline that utilizes the Re-Pair compression algorithm. This process ensures that the optimization is both practical and safe, maintaining compatibility with tools and debuggers while preserving the bytecode length to prevent any impact on consensus.

Ensuring Safety and Compatibility

To maintain safety, the system incorporates several measures, including graceful fallback to original bytecode in case of errors, jump destination validation, and a dedicated error response for unintended super-instruction execution. The pipeline is designed to adapt to evolving contract patterns and compiler outputs, ensuring continuous efficiency improvements.

Performance Gains and Future Developments

Benchmark tests have demonstrated substantial performance gains. In a 24-hour mixed transaction sync test, the optimized execution reduced block sync time from 575 minutes to 494 minutes, marking a 14% improvement. These advancements enhance the overall scalability and throughput of the BSC ecosystem.

Looking ahead, BSC plans to periodically update the optimization pipeline to align with new compiler outputs and application trends. This proactive approach ensures that BSC remains at the forefront of efficiency and performance, providing ongoing benefits to builders, auditors, and node operators.
