Anthropic’s report emphasizes the need for enhanced U.S. energy infrastructure to maintain global AI leadership, recommending policy reforms to support AI model training and deployment.

Anthropic has released a comprehensive report highlighting the necessity for the United States to bolster its energy infrastructure to sustain its leadership in artificial intelligence (AI). According to Anthropic, significant investments in computing power and energy resources are essential to build AI capabilities domestically.

Energy Needs for Global AI Leadership

The report outlines the increasing energy demands of training frontier AI models, which require consistent access to reliable power sources. Anthropic projects that by 2028, the U.S. will need approximately 50 gigawatts (GW) of electric capacity, double New York City’s peak electricity demand, to support both AI model development and everyday usage. This is crucial to compete with China, which has significantly outpaced the U.S. in energy infrastructure development, adding over 400 GW of power capacity last year.

Policy Recommendations

To address these challenges, Anthropic proposes two strategic pillars:

  • Building Large-Scale AI Training Infrastructure: This includes making federal lands available for AI infrastructure, expediting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) processes, and partnering with the private sector to enhance power line infrastructure.
  • Supporting Broad-Based AI Innovation Nationwide: Recommendations include accelerating geothermal, natural gas, and nuclear permitting, establishing National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors, and strengthening domestic production of critical grid components.

Strategic Actions for U.S. Competitiveness

Anthropic emphasizes the need for U.S. policymakers to overcome regulatory barriers that hinder energy project development. The report suggests reforms such as creating strategic reserves of grid components and expanding technical training programs to support the AI sector’s growth.

By implementing these strategies, the U.S. can ensure the infrastructure necessary for future AI advancements, maintaining its competitive edge in the global AI landscape. Anthropic’s full report, titled “Build AI in America,” provides a detailed blueprint for achieving these goals and is available on their official website.
