Algorand (ALGO) introduces Liquid Auth, a decentralized, passwordless authentication protocol for Web3, enhancing user-owned identity and interoperability between Web2 and Web3 platforms.

In a significant stride towards enhancing digital identity security, Algorand (ALGO) has unveiled Liquid Auth, a decentralized and passwordless authentication protocol designed to revolutionize Web3 authentication, according to Algorand Foundation. This innovative solution promises to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3, offering a secure, self-owned identity system for users.

Advancing Beyond Traditional Authentication

The digital landscape has long grappled with the challenges posed by traditional password systems, including security vulnerabilities and data breaches. In response, major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have adopted passkeys—biometric and phishing-resistant credentials. However, these solutions often remain limited by proprietary protocols and a lack of interoperability between Web2 and Web3 environments.

Features of Liquid Auth

Liquid Auth leverages FIDO2 and WebAuthn standards to deliver a fully decentralized authentication experience. This protocol enables users to log in to any website supporting passkeys without the need for passwords or centralized vaults, effectively eliminating the risk of Big Tech lock-in. Key features of Liquid Auth include:

  • Web2-Web3 Integration: Seamlessly operates with both Web3 applications and traditional Web2 platforms.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Provides secure logins powered by Algorand and passkeys, free from passwords and intermediaries.
  • Industry Standard Compliance: Compatible with existing biometric technologies, such as fingerprint and facial recognition.
  • User Sovereignty: Keys are securely stored in the user’s wallet, derived from their mnemonic, ensuring no dependency on corporate databases.
  • Chain-Agnostic: Although developed by Algorand, Liquid Auth can be adopted by any blockchain ecosystem.

Pioneering Implementation with Pera Wallet

The initial implementation of Liquid Auth is being launched with Pera Wallet, utilizing the Universal Wallet (24-words) system. This allows users to authenticate on conventional sites like GitHub or Amazon using keys derived from their mnemonic. Algorand applications can also use passkeys as proof of account ownership, replacing costly and non-standard Sign-with-* flows. This development marks a significant advancement in securely and seamlessly connecting Web2 and Web3.

Open Source and Developer-Friendly

Liquid Auth is open source and free to integrate, offering developers top-tier security combined with an effortless user experience. It provides a robust framework for those looking to implement secure, passwordless authentication in their applications.
